TRANSCRIPTION OF THE MEMORIAL STONES
Over the last decade, volunteers have transcribed the inscriptions carved into the memorial stones. In some cases the inscriptions are still clear and legible in good light, but the majority are difficult to read due to the effects of weathering and fragmentation of the stones. Our Research Group has compared the inscriptions transcribed in 2014 with the report of inscriptions made in 1984 and also with a transcription made by the Devon historian W.H. Hamilton Rogers in 1894. A list of the transcribed names and dates is available for download here.
As part of our ongoing improvement work at the graveyard we have installed forty small plaques engraved with QR codes. Most modern mobile phones have QR decoding software built into their cameras and scanning each QR code gives instant access to the current biography.
Biographies
We are actively engaged in researching the families of those known to be buried in the graveyard and many of the biographies can be accessed by clicking the links below. Information is collected from sources including original documents, ledgers, newspapers and from online genealogical searches.
Names marked (QR) have updated biographies and a permanent interpretation marker in the graveyard.

Occupations
A list of the occupations as stated in the later Burial Registers (1824-1854) can be downloaded here.
If you have any information about the occupation of any individuals buried in the graveyard or related to anyone mentioned in the biographies please let us know so that we can improve the information we hold. Contact enquiries@edgt.org.uk.
Wills and probate inventories
Our Research Group members use Wills and other legal documents that are available in the public domain to learn more about some individuals buried in the graveyard. Wills in particular can provide valuable information about the deceased's family, friends, servants, property, wealth and prized possessions.
Many Wills have been transcribed in full or in part by our Group to aid our research, and some of them are available here.

Number of burials
There are slightly over 1500 names mentioned in the available burial registers and the vast majority were buried in the Dissenters' graveyard. There is a gap in the records from the Bow Meeting for the period 1757-1776 when no burials were mentioned, so the number of burials in the graveyard is likely to be understated. Burials in the graveyard grew in number over the years as can be seen from the charts below. The most burials in a single year (37) occurred in 1832 - the year of the cholera epidemic that swept through the City between July and October. Over 400 people died during the outbreak and some were buried in established graveyards. The burial ledgers do not mention cholera, but an interesting memorial to Thomas Hatch in the Unitarian Chapel at Moretonhampstead reads: Also to the memory of his beloved wife ELIZABETH BEARE who was taken from him on the 8th of August 1832 in the awful time of the cholera morbus then raging in the city and her remains interred in the Saints Rest Memorial Ground, Magdalen Road, Exeter. At least eleven people were buried in the graveyard during August 1832 at the height of the outbreak, four of whom were members of the Willcocks family from the St Pauls parish. It seems likely that several victims of the epidemic were buried in the Dissenters' graveyard.
